The Fearful Animal

The Fearful Animal | Entropy of Man Can I ask you a question, have you ever stopped and looked around you? I mean stopped and really looked around you? Take an entire day and listen to the voices that surround you, stop and analyze the beliefs you hold and I guarantee that if you do this long enough you will notice something about your life and the lives of those who surround you. What is that factor you might ask? It is fear.

Unfortunately for us fear is a driving factor in human society, be it active fear or the kind of passive fear ingrained in our beliefs. We humans are petty creatures, governed by our emotions of which fear and hatred are among the most dominate. For the human fear is both a stagnating factor and a stimulate and it is among the most illogical of sentiments.

We murder millions in cold blood out of fear, we sit and observe from our ivory towers as thousands parish from starvation while we horde ever last grain for ourselves out of fear, we seek total control over our environment and surroundings out of fear.

In fact one could even say that fear is both one of the main motivators of the human species and at the same time one of the elements that has caused it the most significant amount of damage. Why do two tribes raise up against each other? Over resources, over territory, over religious differences? At first glance it might seem that the mentioned are the cause of conflict between different sets of humans, but upon deeper inspection it becomes apparent that the driving force behind these factors is fear.

You seek more resources out of fear that at some point you will lack the resources needed for your survival, you wish to expand your territory because you fear that not having enough jeopardizes your ability to maintain the stability you currently have, and you wish to oppress the beliefs of others because you fear the oppression of your own beliefs. These are just a few examples, but in reality fear is the number one factor in all human conflicts.

Contrary to the conclusion that one might initially have, fear is not the byproduct of the conflict it is the cause of the conflict, the conflict stems from fear, and this fear is blinding! Humans will stand idle while climate change runs ramped out of fear of change, we fear the systems that we ourselves put in place, we fear rejection, death, sickness, poverty, and reality itself. We wishes to live in a fairytale, to avoid the truth of the human predicament, that one day we will parish. Out of this fear of we have created countless tales of an afterlife. We rather close both eyes and hid under the covers then face the fact that we are alone in a dark lit room.  When I was younger I realized the logical fallacy in such behavior, we are akin to the soldier who upon being injured avoids looking at the wound out of fear. Well guess what, avoiding acknowledging the situation won't solve it, if anything it will only make things worst!

The ironic thing is that fear usually comes before the actual feared situation, it may even be catalyst of the situation itself. We fear going to war with another nation so we attack that nation first and start a war with it.  We fear economic collapse so we begin to cutback on our consumption and thus cause a stagnation that leads to collapse. The bottom-line is that we are scared little creatures. We are so afraid of failure that we are running towards complete self-destruction; how ironic.

My question is when are we going to change, when will we be brave enough to simply face the facts of our existential conundrum?
"We are born, we live, and we die. As of right now there is no escape from this path, and no it isn't a cycle... at least not as far as your consciousness is concerned to the best of my knowledge, but then again I don't know shit and neither do you. Do you?"
Even so, just because you are bound to the chains of mortality it doesn't mean that you need to live your entire life in fear of the unknown  known.  We need to grow up as a species, we need to realize that our actions are not without repercussions, and that in many cases the very things we try to avoid we cause because of our lack of control over the illogical emotion known as fear.

Unfortunately, I have no idea when we will realize what we are doing to ourselves, to our ecosystem, to our descendants, and to the beautiful planet that we inhabit. Hopefully we will crawl out from under the covers soon, and begin to resolve the issues our civilization is pressed with.

Either way, I hope that this was food for thought, and I look forward to reading your comments.

-Cheers.
